Tough job in Engelberg

Tough job in Engelberg

Insert: 20.12.2012
This should be a trip like another one. But this turned over to very unique experience due to perfect people, powder conditions and many experience which I want to share with you.

Engelberg is located in the central Switzerland about 40kms from Lucern. This canton is called Obwalden and i tis about 1200kms from Ostrava. Our crew was composed from Grobe, Brunek, Romek and me as the only skier. The departure was as usualy delayed without any map or GPS. So we somehow epxpected some minor issues on the way. The viset came when in the Prague, then when I woke up during the journey somewhere on the side of the road instead on the highway and the last fun we had when we drove two times aroud the lake near Lucern.

No matter what we arrived to Engelberg around 10 am and we headed straight to the powder job. Fresh 30 cms of powder was a sign of a big fun. What I did not expect that I lost my ski around 2pm and this showed up as unresolvable problem. After one hour of searching we called more buddies and after 2 hours with 5 people we gave it up. Well at least started to snow again so the mood went up.

On Sunday is the opening of the upper lifts so we can visit Mr. Laub (part of the mountain). But Laub showed us his dark side. Bunch of other riders with own guide went to ride the Laub face and trigged a huuuge avalanche. This avalanche turned into a huge powder sluff with about 20m high cloud around. The sluff was eating riders like a huge machina and going so fast. I have never seen such a fast one. There were two buried riders who we had to dig out from snow. Both of them had a ABS backpack and they had a time to trigger them. Part of the backpacks were ripped off the back itself.

This istuation showed that if the face is ridden by a lot of people nothing should happen. You can find more information in German language HERE .

Next days we spent riding in other resorts mainly due to a heavy snowfall. Small resorts remained open so we had a chance to see something else than famous Engelberg. The best was probably  Dallenwil-Wirzweli. A small resort where kids are going to school by a cabin lift.  This resort was a surprise and all the lift were open just because of us. The next days we got back under the Titlis and we were riding Laub again. And first tracks again. A day efore the end of the trip we got a blue bird sky . Finally we had a change to shoot some photos. What was a bit disappointing that the whole resort is not so excellent when it comes to light conditions. But we made it as you probably can see.  Our way back went without problems apart from an adrenalin experience when we drove throug Bregenz without any highway vignette. But 1200kms we made like nothing.

Last words I want to say and i tis that powder is a huuge drug and when you got a nice fresh powder with the right crew it is simply incredible.
