how to survive

Insert: 16.12.2009
How to survive a four days riding and sleeping on car park. This kind of trip I am able to done only at the beginning of the season, because conditions and our technical gear in not on a level where it should be. Sometimes it is even a question of survival.

So we are going towards not realy good weather forecast. Four foggy days with snow showers. But as I told, at the beginning of the season I do not mind. What will be will be. Our crew are composed from two freeriders me, Viktor Galuska and two “jib da BRO” Jakub and Michal. We somehow could not get out from Czech so we are leaving Olomouc at 10pm. After several hours of ride I am realy tired. So we are putting our tent on the car park and having  good night right next to higway. The first day on Möltaller Gletcher was not excelent. A lot of fog, windy and temperature around -15. Off course the wind chill about -23. But we got a couple of good runs and then we went down to the car park to have a look for some “acommondation”. Suddenly we found a nice place near the forest so we built our base camp with tents and little fire. The night came and we wasn’t realy sure about our sleeping bags. Mainly “BRO” with their summer tent and summer sleeping bags. Viktor got off course his own style and his 0.7l bottle of rum is like the best sleeping bag. When I told him that was a cold night, he said: “Is only a psychological feeling”. After we woked up in -6 degrees, we got a breakfast and left up to the gletscher. About the 11 am we got a kind of blue sky with some clouds and the riding was pretty good. Nice smooth powder with -25 degrees. I will not talk about that more in detail.

Suddenly I saw Jakub waving his hands like a Metalica drummer. And it was obvious that only two shirts and jacket is not realy good to -26. But next night was real test. The temperature was about -8 and every water froze. Like Jakubs contact lenses. That night, I think, I did not sleep. The next morning was pretty funny. Wiktor was hungry and tried to eat some lift operators meat. But he find out that it was like 2 day old and whole time ouside. It was powder time againg and we were riding as much as we could. The last nigt was quite normal because we are already used to have -8 in the tent. Last day we end about 1pm, packed up our tent and tried to get out. But our Renault is dead. After several days of staying in cold with the interior ligths on, the battery was exhausted. What is even whorse, our Ranault has not got a starter key and a hand break. But belive or not I have stopped a couple of Czech riders with VW and they realy helped to us. After 20 mins of starting our Reny did not want to start. After 40 minutes got up and we were totally happy. So many thanks to Czech crew without them hadnt  got our low cost trip a good end.
