Powder bathing in Tauplitz

Return to Eden

Insert: 17.02.2011
When we were leaving Tauplitz, we were saying, that we would come back when it snows. But the first look on web after return made us thinking. Basically we should turn round and go back, the snowfall is around 40 – 50 cm in following two days. We all have arranged some work, but whatever, work isn’t a rabbit and we can’t miss that.

We warn up at home only for one day and we turn round heading to Styria. Only Vlasto can’t take a place in this blowout, unfortunatelly work obligation don’t let him go, so at least, as the local citizen, he keeps us informed by SMS. For the first time in those years we ride, we start off to a journey with fact, that it won’t be azure. But we don’t care, most important is that it is snowing, really a lot. After passing Semmering the snowing is gaining strength, actually we can’t ride faster than 80 kph, but we have big enough time reserve, so we are again at half past six in the morning on the parking place beneath Tauplitz. There’s completely different world than what we left basically a few hours ago. Before there was green everywhere and now here is thirty centrimetres of snow and the snowing is getting stronger. Around us are riding loaders and tractors with a plow, sometimes is looks like each second citizen of Tauplitz had one in his garage.

We are very first at the ticket office as well as at the cableway, and still the only one, so we hope that is could stay that way for the rest of the day. We move by the endless four chair lift to the top of the Tauplitz and we really don’t understand that loads of powder which accrued here in tens of hours. We make first ride just for a try around the lift, despite the slope is quite steep, it doesn’t ride very fast. There’s really much snow. We have to ride basically straight, anyway it’s finery. Man doesn’t go very often through being fed by tons of powder like this. But how much powder is here, equally much is here fog and the visibility really sucks, so choosing of the slope is clear. On sunday we looked out part of a forest with eight hundred of altitude, so we go there.

We go through a freerider’s dream after just a few metres. We have powder everywhere, we see only fragments of the way, we ride totally covered in powder. I can’t help myself but I have to push into snowforecast, which forecasted only five centimetres in two days. Those guys don’t know how to forecast for about three years and the forecasts are still worse and worse, they probably care just about America and cough on Europe, because they were totally wrong. There’s not just half meter of powder, here’s entire meter!!!!!!! And it still doen’t stop snowing. Nah five numbers. If man follows their lead, we wouldn’t go anywhere.

So this is how looks the real powderline like. We feel like in the movies from Utah or Alaska, this is mega mega powder. We ride first two three lines like in trance before we put ourself together. Although we had powder in each of our trips in last years, this is something completely different, we always wanted to go through this.

It has only one deficiency and that’s the light for taking pictures. It’s really impossible to photograph in this, but we don’t even care. Important is to enjoy this. We make one line and another, we don’t even think of time very much, nevertheless we slow down our speed, we have tomorrow a lot to do here so we don’t have to overdo that.

Next day it’s completely the same, including the weather, although they said somethinf different on Austrian TV. A little pity, I thought up great line for photo with Dachstein and it’s icebergs in the background but never mind, we can’t have everything. Mainly that we went through real powderdays. We ride through still the same forest and after two days there’s still a lot to choose, what’s more, when it snowed another twenty centrimetres over night. Pity we can’t stay still on Friday, that’s when the sky should get clear, but unfortunatelly, we can’t do anything.

So that was the best of the best trip, we went through with powder. To this gets close only winter in Vrátná, two years ago, then there’s a long space and then the other actions. I hope this wasn’t the last thing this winter and we’ll repeat it soon.

Hi Komanč
