Obertauern & Krippenstein

New Year's Eve on mountains

Insert: 07.02.2011
After Christmas it was about time to go again to the mountains... We give together the old group of Farmers, Petr Mašek and Máca from Prag. Tomáš S. managed to us thanks to his friend Franz luxury accommodation in the centre of Bad Aussee. It’s good base for trips to resort around Salzburg. It’s also great base for New Year’s Eve party.

We have the accommodation from Thursday, but some of us who was impatient took us from home already on Wednesday morning. We discovered the situation, when 4 people barely fit into the car, and that’s after throwing out all food and half of equipment. And what is more, one man must still get in. Then starts our favorite game – Tetris. Opel Insignia is quite good looking and representative vehicle, but for our purpose is not so good... So we leave packed up to the roof.

Coincidentally, we come to Obertauern. We didn’t expect good conditions, so I was pleasantly surpised. Expecially I like freeride potential of this resort. The resort is spread out and you can start in two sides from the valley we came from. It’s one of the resorts, where I like to return to. There’s still a lot to do...

Tired after whole day we start to solve what to do with abroach evening... The braver of us aren’t affraid to be forgotten with the bottle in the hand, but somebody doesn’t give up and tries to find some cheap accommodatin for the first night in the peak season... Surprisingly be found it!

The second day I wake up with stomach problems and I’m not able to operate. On the way to Bad Ausee we deal with where we will ski today. That’s how starts an unbelieveble roadtrip from one resort to another, we curse the weather. We end in Looser, where guys take tickets from ending skiers for a couple of Euros.

For final 2 days we have in schedule Krippenstein. I heard a lot of praise on this resort, but also that if there’s not really a lot of snow, there’s nothing to do. So we start to the top curiously. Despite this is a freeride resort, there’re a lot of downhill skiers, half of them from our region. Besides several main cableways and a lift there are only 2 successive gondolas, which takes you to plateau in altitude of 2100 metres. That’s not so low when you consider, that you can expect 1500 metres of superelevation on the way down! A few downhills in powder like that must satisfy and exhaust you. The way down goes on poles do a wide ravine where starts a thin woodland. You can ride from one cliff to another until you reach the signs of traverse which leads you to the slope where you ride just a bit. But it’s improtant to note, if you don’t know it there, you have to ride quite carefully in places where you don’t see under youself. There are lot of different thresholds and rock holes which aren’t good to fall into. It didn’t happen to us, that we got stuck anywhere. We always traversed to safety. The terrain is here incredibly ragged and creative! Despite there was 1,5 metres of snow, not very fresh, and it was warm, we enjoyed the skiing pretty well. It’s a discovery of the season for me and I can’t wait to come back here after regular snowing! It seems to be here everything what a freerider needs. There’s quite a lot space for everybody. I probably never saw anything like that before. You can ride at least 1000 metres of altitude smoothly without any unnecesarry movements. There’s really a lot of to discover and to pleasure to admire local countryside. When you consider that it is one of the nearest alpine resorts... We thank both resorts for their hospitality!

On the way home the fun doesn’t end. Máca is overtaking police in Austria in 140 kph in the section of 120 kph speed limit and futher in even less without any slowing down. Saying „I see them...“ he moves up.... The police doesn’t pass over the obvious provocation and stops us by STOP beacons. We all stare incredulously at Máca and guess his financial situation. We are lucky because the policewoman has grandmother from Brno, who we hereby salute. He gets it only for 30 Euros! So the trip was a success and soon we can look forward to another!
