Glacier Circle Cabin 2

a loong way back

Insert: 14.03.2013
Here is the second part of the trip to Glacier Circle Cabin. This time it is about a way back from the hut. The journey was very tough and also with a taste of adrenalin. For details see article below...

The next morning is beautiful, we spent the morning by building igloos, rabbit statues, larger than life size and sunbathing. In the afternoon we went just for an easy freeride and catch some lines. Evening was only about to plan how to go back tomorrow.

Since the last few days of really nice and sunny weather, a lots os snow decided to see the valley and all the next day we saw and heard a large number of avalanches. For this reason we set the return path already at about 5 AM. And small mistake step in, in the morning everything was frozen and smooth like a glass. Since we did not have any ice aces, after the first few hundred yards we gave up. Climbing up such a steep face under these conditions is like waiting for the avalanche. We knew from the paper guide, that we can return back along the Beaver River. This stretch of the river, however, is about 33 km plus a few miles to the river itself. Nothing to do, it will be a long loong hike. We turned off, took the skis off began our journey down to the river.

The congress takes us about two hours and is rather wandering in the woods, circumventing impassable places, crossing streams and the like. Finally, we come to the old manual lift, using which it is possible to overcome the river. Among other things, it is one of the few landmarks that we are able to accurately determine. The actual crossing the river in a suspended trolley is quite funny, although pulling about 5 mm thick wire (with which, the entire system gets up and running) with a fully loaded lift is hard work. Furthermore, it follows endless hours of marching on slightly undulating huge valley. Around march demanding the orientation in the field, where they are not the slightest landmarks, in addition to the river and the mountains around, which is difficult to observe in a snowy forest. After a 10-hour march, when we are almost at the edge forces and already eagerly watching for the road, a few hundred feet above him we see the little cottage. When it occurs, can not keep wondering. Uto Hut as booth called, is just over half the entire march. Immediately we are running it now continue to happen. Blessing in disguise is that cottage open. In addition, we planned that we come to the end now, and therefore we do not have hardly any food. For the first time in my life I give gratitude for the remnants of instant soups (although they are all already a couple of years out of date), which were put there by our ancestors.

The last day has been marked by very exhausting hike. Moreover, mine and Steve's climbing skins  are getting wet and with and full of needels. Which ended up by skins off our skis. And more this has the effect that between the skis and the skins is getting a lot of snow. Thus it is necessary every few hundred meters to stop everything to clean out the skins and redeploy them. This exercise becomes mentally exhausting.  The only interesting monent from this monotonous hike is a bear family, which is fortunately so frighten that they climbed up the nearest tree.

Finally, about three o'clock in the afternoon we arrived at the parking lot near the highway, the last mile with skis on our shoulders. It's a beautiful sunny day. We are sitting down on the commons dry grass, where the snow melted down and waiting for a ride. Sitting completely satisfy us and we are enjoying feeling after a well done job.
