I came across this event on so hated facebook less than 2 weeks before its start… Arctix is happening on the north of Norway, 300 km behind the arctic circle, basically out of civilization. The goal is to shred those fantastic peaks and spend a time in bunch of freeriders, pilots and helicopter… Plus 2  - star FWQ comp happens here.

No hesitation and the flight to Tromso is booked. Lucie is joining me last minute. Suddenly, here we are in the plane, heading north! 28.3. evening, we are back in the middle of winter ( - 27° C that night). Already when flying over the Lyngen Alps we realized that we are going to land to the paradise on the Earth…

Than it appeared that we won’t be able to make it to Tamok, 100 km far away… A bus is going to a village near by next day morning, so we sleep on the warm airport. We received an info about good snow and possible flyable day, which is turning us on. Eather way, one thing is for sure. We can see the perfect mountains right from the Tromso and that’s all we need…

A bus driver is asking us if we know the area. He sees we don’t, so he talk to a frient who talk to his friend who is giving us a ride right to our destination! Lucky day. We got to know a good character of these people, relying to each other, living hard northern live…Suddenly, instead of doubts if we manage to reach tamok till the evening, we are flying up in the helicopter! The conditions are one of the best of last years and the weather is perfect! We are doing 2 flights and skiing perfect powder our first day… We are informed that heliskiing is ilegal in Norway and this event is an exception. Pilots with their machine have flown here from Sweden and we have a permit for certain area. We are pretty free in a way what we want to do and everyone is responsible for his own ass. Fair enough!

Due to a particular prohibition it is not easy to get drunk here. As a satisfaction you are allowed to do pretty much whatever you want in this beautifull, wild, huge mountains. Seems like God created them just for freeriders! Despite of max. altitude 1590m they offer a big faces with equal vertical, all the way to the sea level... There is not that many “ideal faces” in the Alps. It is still many unriden mountains here! The season last from October to June, but consider the “polar night” which allowes the sun to charge just about 4 houres a day in mid winter... That is where I have realized the meaning of prohibition...!

An interresting feature here is a distortion of sizes. For example insted of 4m easy drop you pick from the heli you can easily end up sending a huge 20m drop... I heard about the same especially in AK bud here it seems to be the same thing. Choosing a line is of course not as free as one would wish, simply because other 5 persons in a heli and limited time of watching your line from the heli... We as a 2 had to be joining an uncompeted groups, which had already chosen a destinantion. It was a good thing, because the locals knew the conditions best...  Unfortunatelly my headcam did not cooperate well, so I dont have some key lines in this video...

Thanks to Valtteri Hirvonen for a firs – class pictures!

TO BE CONTINUE!
